We closed out 2019 with a U.S. Air Force Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract award from AFWERX! Our performance acceleration platform, powered by continuous time-series data monitoring and data-driven goals, showed the air force a plethora of possible application areas within the aerial warfare domain. Who is AFWERX? Established in 2017 by the Secretary of the Air Force, AFWERX is a catalyst for agile Air Force engagement across industry, academia, and non-traditional contributors to create transformative opportunities. The core mission of AFWERX is to improve Air Force capabilities by connecting innovators, simplifying technology transfer and accelerating results. AFWERX has partnered with the AFRL, a scientific research organization operated by the U.S. Air Force Materiel Command, to streamline the SBIR process to speed up the experience, broaden the pool of potential applicants, and decrease bureaucratic overhead.
AFWERX has an open call for innovative defense-related technology SBIR topic. The objective of the open call topic is to explore Innovative Defense-Related Dual-Purpose Technologies that may not be covered by any other specific SBIR topic and thus to explore options for solutions that may fall outside the Air Force’s current fields of focus but that may be useful to the US Air Force. An additional objective of this topic is to grow the industrial base of the US Air Force. This topic will reach companies that can complete a feasibility study and prototype validated concepts in accelerated Phase I and II schedules. This topic is specifically aimed at later stage development rather than earlier stage basic science and research.
